At Boronia Heights State School everything is new in the library for your child in Prep.

Lessons for Prep students are conducted in the junior fiction section of our library and in Term One your child is introduced to dozens of book characters. We read stories, talk about the emotions of the characters and try to make connections between the texts and our own lives.  We recall the main facts and the details of the stories we read in sequence, and we ask question before, during and after reading so that we can improve our understanding of what the author is trying to tell us.

Prep students learn how to browse for titles that interest them and how to return these titles to the shelves. They learn how to turn pages correctly and how to care for books at school and at home.

In the Junior Fiction area of our library students are able to access new books displays, award–winning titles, specific character collections and special day displays.

Term two is a very exciting time as Preps borrow books to take home and share. Every student needs a cloth bag in order to borrow during lesson times. Sometimes we get stuck reading books about the same thing or even reading the same book over and over, but it is very important for Preps to be able to make their own choices as they develop their own reading skills and preferences.  Sometimes this may even mean taking home the biggest, heaviest title that can be found!

During Term Two we also begin to examine Non-fiction titles and use visual literacy skills to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction. We compare and contrast information and illustrations on subjects such as dinosaurs, bugs, reptiles, sharks, big machines, occupations and so on.  We use ‘How to Draw’ books to help us develop our own illustrating skills.  The library has a display of huge blow-up insects for us to examine and we use magnifying glasses to search for details in drawings and photographs.

Please feel free to visit the library before school as our teacher-librarian will be happy to discuss your child’s recreational reading needs.
